Sheepskins

We are currently low on our stock of sheepskins. There will some returning in early winter but after that there will not be a regular replacement of pelts as we are planning to phase out the freezer lamb trade which will also eliminate our sheepskins. We will try to source other sheepskins from the butcher when possible and have them tanned.  Sometimes people who bring their sheep or lambs in for processing don't want the hides and so they would be discarded along with inedible carcass material. This seems like an awful waste to us so we asked the slaughterhouse to alert us when sheepskins would otherwise be thrown away. If they are free of defects (no matted wool, no insurmountable amount of hay or chaff in the wool) then we prepare them as needed and send them out for tanning. We do our best to describe exactly what they appear to be but some aspects such as breed may be an educated guess. Pelt types will vary!

If you are ordering over $200 of pelts, or are outside of the US, please contact us prior to placing an order so that we can give you a shipping quote.

Beautiful, soft, fluffy machine washable sheepskins in a variety of colors. (See washing instructions here.) All our pelts come from our lambs who have gone into our freezer trade. We always tan all our lambs' pelts, and bones and trim from the carcasses is used by people who raw feed their dogs so very little goes to waste. We feel that it's another way we can be respectful of their lives.

Sizes are roughly 2.5 feet wide by 3.5 feet long with edges that are somewhat irregular. (Sheep shaped!) Exact measurements of the leather side are given for each pelt.

Sheepskin : 7 Image A

This cream color shearling pelt is from a 4H market lamb. The wool has been trimmed for show and is just 1/8 inch long, matte with no shine and feels like crushed velvet. There are no cuts and no wool loss. There are 2 tiny nicks in the hide but they are on the very edge and won't interfere with any purpose. With the wool being so short the pelt offers little cushioning but would make a nice surface over something else where a little insulation is desired. Or, a crafty person may think this is awesome for lining slippers, mittens or a jacket. The pelt measures 27 inches wide by 39.5 inches long.

This cream color shearling pelt with a faint number is from a 4H market lamb. There's probably a deep philosophical lesson to be learned here as the number 42 is the answer to the meaning of life, the universe and everything, as anyone familiar with the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy can tell you. The more obvious lesson is that the 4H show folks use a marking paint that doesn't fully disappear during the tanning process. The number is actually not quite this bright. There are also 2 small dark dots of black wool over the hips but there are no cuts or defects in the hide. The wool is matte and about 1/8 inch long. With the wool being so short the pelt offers little cushioning but would make a nice surface over something else where a little insulation is desired. Or, a crafty person may think this is awesome for lining slippers, mittens or a jacket. The pelt measures a large 28 inches wide by 42.5 inches long.
